COVINGTON - The Newton Rams had their best offensive showing all season Saturday night with more than 300 passing yards, but it wasn't enough as they fell 46-13 to Region 2-AAAAA foe Stephenson.
Freshman quarterback Kenneth Patrick led Newton's attack by completing 19 of 26 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Patrick started the game by competing his first eight passes and was 12 of 17 for 180 yards at halftime.
Patrick hurt his knee in the game, but Newton coach Nick Collins said he didn't know the extent of the injury.
"The guy did a good job," Collins said. "He's getting better and better every week. You've got to give the kid credit. I just hope the knee injury isn't serious."
Senior Ruben Hatchett led Newton receivers with seven catches for 132 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown catch for the first score of the game.
"I wish he was a sophomore or junior," Collins said. "He works hard every day. Ruben is a competitor, and he's a testament to the program here."
Davon Mann added four catches for 126 yards with a 26-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter.
"I was pleased," Collins said. "That's one of the things we've said all along: We came here to throw the football. We're gaining some respect with what we're doing, and we threw the ball well tonight."
While the Rams had almost everything go right with their passing game, they wound up with negative yardage running the ball with minus-19 yards on 19 carries. The Rams also had trouble holding onto the ball, fumbling four times and losing three.
Stephenson (7-1, 4-1) took advantage of the mistakes as the Jaguars scored touchdowns after each fumble recovery.
"We said going into this game that we couldn't make any mistakes and they capitalized on every mistake we made," Collins said. "You can't do that against good teams because they will make you pay for those mistakes."
Newton (1-7, 1-4) came up with some big plays early as Demetrius McCray completed a 45-yard pass to Hatchett on the opening drive. However, the Rams didn't get anything out of the drive as Matt Veal missed a 34-yard field goal.
On their next possession, the Rams were faced with a second-and-13 from their own 2, but Patrick completed a 55-yard pass to Mann, putting the Rams at the Stephenson 43.
Three plays later, Patrick hit Hatchett for a 29-yard touchdown at the 2:41 mark in the first quarter. Veal's extra point gave Newton a 7-0 advantage.
Stephenson came back on its next possession and tied the game at 7-7 with 1:47 remaining in the first quarter.
The Jaguars scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 20-7 lead into halftime.
Stephenson added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to lead 34-7. The Jaguars scored another touchdown early in the fourth to take a 40-7 lead.
On Newton's next possession, the Rams were faced with a fourth-and-6 at their own 41 and faked the punt. Josh Cloer completed a 32-yard pass to Hatchett to give Newton a first-and-10 at the Stephenson 27.
Two plays later, Franklin Clackum completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Mann, cutting the deficit to 40-13.
The Jaguars tacked on a touchdown late in the game to take a 46-13 lead.
Jerome Rudolph led Stephenson with 99 yards on 12 carries, including two touchdowns. Denzel Hartley also scored two touchdowns for Stephenson.
