Man charged with sodomy, false imprisonment

COVINGTON - A Covington man was arrested and charged with sodomy last week after he allegedly assaulted a woman who was staying at his home.

According to Lt. Bill Watterson, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the suspect, Shawn Anthony Ramsay, 30, of 60 Copeland Circle, and the 26-year-old victim met at a club earlier this month and continued to communicate with one another online.

The victim reportedly went to Ramsay's residence on Friday to spend the weekend with him. At one point during the evening, Ramsay allegedly attempted to kiss the victim and she ignored him. The situation eventually progressed to fondling and the suspect stopped, Watterson said.

About 4 a.m., the victim was awakened by the suspect, who was once again allegedly trying to fondle her. She reportedly resisted Ramsay's advances, at which point he pulled out a handgun and laid it on the bed.

"At that point she began to fear the perpetrator and cooperate with him," he said.

The victim contacted authorities the next morning about the incident, and Sgt. Sonny Goodson was called to investigate the allegation.

Following the conclusion of his investigation, Goodson determined there was enough evidence to arrest the suspect and took him into custody at his residence, Watterson said.

In addition to sodomy, Ramsay has also been charged with false imprisonment.
