Porterdale to host annual tree lighting

PORTERDALE - Santa is coming to Porterdale, and he's bringing along his reindeer.

The annual lighting of the city's Christmas tree, atop the Porterdale Mill Lofts, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Spectators will gather in the parking lot across the street from the mill for the arrival of Santa, who will be led down Main Street by the Alcovy High School band in a reindeer-drawn sleigh.

The lighting of the tree will likely take place just before 8 p.m., according to Porterdale's Better Hometown Manager Patti Battle.

"We also have all the churches participating in singing Christmas carols and the lighting of the tree, and a photographer so children can come and get their pictures taken with Santa and the live reindeer," she said.

Festivities will continue through Saturday, with street vendors and entertainment.

The Covington Regional Ballet will perform Friday night and various local musicians will take to the stage from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

"We have a lot going on for such a small place. It's exciting," Battle said.

A wine tasting will be held at Cork Poppers at the lofts at 8 p.m. Saturday, as well.

In addition, Latte Da coffee shop will sponsor breakfast with Santa every Saturday morning in December. For reservations, call 678-625-7877.
