Two men rob store at gunpoint
Fifth local business hit this month

COVINGTON - The recent rash of armed robberies in Newton County continued earlier this week as two men staged a holdup of the Discount Food Mart on Ga. Highway 142 on Monday night.

According to Lt. Bill Watterson, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office, two black men, dressed in all black clothing and wearing hoods over their faces, walked into the convenience store just before 10 p.m. and demanded money.

One of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun, pointed it at the clerk and told him to open the register. The robbers then fled the scene with $280 in cash and about $100 worth of lottery tickets.

Earlier this month, armed robbers knocked off four other local businesses including Chapman's Chevron on Ga. Highway 81, Nov. 15; Rocky Plains Convenience Store near the intersection of Ga. Highway 162 and Ga. Highway 212, Nov. 17; the Shell gas station and convenience store near the intersection of Brown Bridge Road and Magnet Road, Nov. 18; and Zaxby's on Turner Lake Road, Nov. 18.

Authorities say they usually see a spike in the number of armed robberies around the holiday shopping season, as criminals look to gain quick access to cash.
