Elderly man beaten, robbed

COVINGTON - A 71-year-old man was beaten and robbed by three young men outside his home on Ga. Highway 212 on Saturday afternoon.

According to Lt. Bill Watterson, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the elderly victim said the three suspects, who appeared to be white men, knocked on his door about 1:30 p.m. and asked if he had seen their dog.

The suspects, who were all wearing bandannas on the lower halves of their faces, then hit the victim in the head, knocking him to the ground.

The robbers took some cash the victim had on him and ran around the right side of the home, out of sight, Watterson said.

Investigators are tracking down leads in the case, which remains under investigation.
