COVINGTON - The 2007 Covington Christmas Parade will take place at 11 a.m. downtown this Saturday.
Sponsored by the Covington Lions Club and Main Street Covington, the parade's theme is Celebrate the Season, and entrants are encouraged to interpret that however they choose.
So far this year, the Lions Club has received 100 entry forms, said parade organizer Ed Minge.
Participating this year will be the bands from Newton, Eastside and Alcovy high schools, along with Smokey Bear, various schools, businesses, church and civic groups, and, of course, Santa Claus.
Floats will be judged in several categories.
Newton County Teacher of the Year Eric Adams, a Latin teacher at Eastside High School, will be this year's grand marshal. The honorary grand marshal will be Mayor Sam Ramsey, whose term will expire at the end of December.
Prior to the parade, entertainment will be provided by Jennifer Morganthall and Pastor John Whatley of First United Methodist Church, along with Moriah Martin, a 13-year-old singer from Loganville.
Letters from local children to Santa Claus will also be read out loud.
The parade will begin at Floyd and Anderson streets and proceed through the Square to Washington Street and back by way of East Avenue.
The Lions Club will also be collecting old eyeglasses, cell phones and hearing aids for recycling.
The cell phones will be given as 911 phones to shut-ins to use in emergencies, while the eyeglasses and hearing aids will go to those who couldn't normally afford them, Minge said.
Last year, the Lions Club collected more than 2,200 pairs of eyeglasses, 500 of which were distributed by First United Methodist Church members during a mission trip to Honduras, he said.
Those who would like to participate in the parade have until Thursday to submit entry forms. There is no entry fee and the only restriction is that entries must be decorated. To obtain an entry form, go to www.covingtongalions.org, www.downtowncovington.org, or pick one up at the Newton County Welcome Center, Ludie's Sporting Goods, The Center, Mayfield Hardware or A Touch of Country.
