MORROW - Both the Heritage boys and girls basketball teams were in action Friday night in a tournament at Morrow High School. The Salem girls were also in action Friday night in a tournament at Union Grove High School.
Both the Salem girls and the Heritage girls are 2-0 on the season and will play again today in the finals of their respective tournaments. The Salem girls advanced to the finals of their tournament with a 62-36 win over Union Grove. The Lady Seminoles play Jonesboro at 7 p.m. today. "Tonight was a good win," Salem coach Bill Roberts said. "We now have to come out and play well against a scrappy Jonesboro team. They are a lot like us." Courtney Hurt led the way with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Rebecca Mitchell had 14 points and Jasmine Patrick added 10. Meanwhile, the Heritage girls collected a 42-32 win over Lovejoy. Defense was the key for the Lady Patriots, who held Lovejoy to just two points in the fourth quarter. "That's how we won the game - defense," Heritage coach Dave Laberrie said. Offensively, the Lady Patriots were led by Neice Lewis and Sarah Herrington. Lewis scored a team-high 13 points, while Herrington added 12. With the win, the Lady Patriots advance to play North Clayton at 6 p.m. today. The Heritage boys weren't as lucky in their Friday night matchup. The Patriots (1-1) led 43-34 at the end of the third quarter. However, Southside-Atlanta opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run and went on to beat the Patriots 65-62. Juron Dobbs led the offensive charge with 19 points. Blake Craft (12), Key Wade (10) and Shakeem Mitchell (10) rounded out Heritage's top scorers.
