Rockdale Citizen Poll 11-24-07

This week's Citizen Poll is an open line ...

"With so much talk these days about the disappointment the youth of today have turned out to be, I wanted to shed some new light on some teenagers that deserve recognition for their acts of kindness. I signed up to take my 5-year-old son to the pep rally that the Heritage High School Patriot Players put on as a fund-raiser for their production of High School Musical Stage Production. The offer was for $25 you could take your child ages 5-12 to Heritage and the cast would show the children two dances, feed them lunch, give them a T-shirt with party favors, and give them a pass into the matinee for the same day. My son was thrilled to go, but I was more thrilled with the attitude of these teenagers. They took their time with these kids, talked to them, interacted with them, made sure to spread out at lunch so each kid would get to sit at a table with a cast member and just really showed them a good time. The cast showed great manners to me as a mother and made my son feel like a star for the day. The children got to be junior cast members and were allowed to participate for the closing number of the show. I applaud the drama director at Heritage and her cast as they proved that not all youth of today are a huge disappointment - in fact there are some remarkable teenagers out there. Thank you."

"A spokesman for Pike's stated on TV that the Conyers store on Salem Road would probably close at the end of the year. Good. What an eyesore. No wonder they are in bankruptcy."

---

"This is a question to Rockdale County: Who paid for the repair of the water leak on College Avenue a few weeks ago? This street was torn up for months to replace the lines. What happened? Whoever did the repaving job after the leak needs to find another job. It is rougher now than it was before all of the repairs started."

---

"I would like to see an investigation by the Rockdale Citizen regarding the number of officers that have left the Conyers Police Department over the last year. I think the number is around 13 or higher. This is a large number for a department the size of Conyers. What is the city manager and police chief (or Maj. Freeman, the real chief of police) doing to curb the loss of officers? This is an issue that goes directly to public safety."

"Rockdale Citizen - I have sent in poll responses in the past only to be ignored. This is one subject that needs to be addressed. I read the Citizen Poll for Rockdale County weekly. There has been so much talk about the school system. This is for the parents and visitors that have chosen to teach our children: It is OK to disobey the laws set forth in our county. Since HHS opened their football field we have watched each week the numerous amount of cars that carelessly park on the side of the road on Ga. Highway 138 directly in front of posted signs that say "No Parking." Have we as parents forgotten that our actions speak louder than our words? Is the action of do as I say and not as I do contentment for every person who has chosen to park their cars in such a dangerous area. I am waiting for the night that a student or small child runs towards a car parked illegally only to get sidetracked and run out onto this busy road. Guess it is OK for cars coming by to get speeding tickets while cars purposely park illegally - for the sake of not having to walk as far to the field. If the county would like to make a lot of money, ticket every car that parks on the street. Week after week during football season, we have watched these cars, wondered about how we can tell our children to obey the laws, and counted the empty parking spaces on school grounds. Parents, before you complain about how bad things are, remember that you are putting yourself as well as others at risk for a horribly serious accident. Please, Rockdale sheriff's department, put a halt to this behavior next year."

"Friday, Nov. 16, I was at the Ga. Highway 138 Kroger Store parking. There are a man with gorgeous white hair and beard. I exclaimed and said 'Santa Claus.' The man spoke to me with his smile - 'Yes, have you been good girl all year?' 'Of cause I am.' It's just short stranger's conversation. He gave me a holiday spirit that I needed. I am big believer of Santa's existence until this date. This man's gesture was influence to my moment of life and he made me happy. That is the true gift from Santa. Thank you, Santa. By the way, Rockdale Citizen new Web site is G-R-E-A-T and finally I can read 'Perspective' section by Web page. I'm just wondering that perhaps, you might be able to add blog sections to this perspective? So that people can interact to columnist or such as a letter to the editor, etc.

"It was finally good to see some comments in this past Saturday's Citizens' Poll that were void of references to someone's skin color, ethnicity and prejudices. Hopefully, this will become the norm again, though I seriously doubt it, given our constituency."

---

"In response to the eyesore issue relative to the school bus parked on the property of Conyers Daycare. I live in a subdivision further down Northside Drive and to me the more serious eyesore is the unkept house and yard across the street from the daycare on the corner lot. The side yard looks abandoned, a fallen tree laid in the yard for months, and the weeds are about waist high. The house itself is in a total state of disrepair with the blinds appearing to have been involved in a fight. Again, to me, this is the eyesore not the school bus."

---

"When are they going to turn on the traffic light at Ga. Highway 138 and Pine Log Road? It is up but not turned on."

---

"I agree with the person about what's going on with the football coaches, at Rockdale High School and the athletic director. Boys' basketball/coaches is a complete mess. They come in with all their talk, no knowledge about our kids and their future. Stop playing mind games with our kids."

---

"I would like to comment on the Nov. 9 paper, where Mr. Charlie Walker did the editorial in letters to the editor. I think we all should be more like that. I applaud him for standing up and speaking out. I don't understand why we don't do that more together - coming together as a team and doing the neighborhood watch. Thank you, Mr. Charles Walker, for putting this in print and challenging us to become better neighbors for each other."

"Saturday, Nov. 17, Rockdale Citizen has a headline the county is moving forward on wells. What a great idea. Let's have the county commission pass an ordinance that says that the developers who come into this county will drill their own wells and provide their own sewage systems. Why should taxpayers pay for developers who are making money in the county, provide all the infrastructure for them at other citizens' expense? Let them drill their own wells, provide their own sanitary sewer systems and charge it to their development."

---

"As a long-time citizen, I remember when wells used to go dry, and we had to carry water in. I live in the north end of the county. Drilling wells over here to try to furnish the county water will not work. What if you do tap into the water over here where people have wells? Get real, man, 500 or 600 gallons ain't going to fill no reservoir."

---

"When I went by the Maxell buildings, I noticed they are tearing down one part of the building. What is the deal with that? That doesn't make sense. Was it falling in? I am sure the county still rents spaces. They could have moved in it and saved money, or move out of it and get a factory here that will bring jobs in, instead of another fast food restaurant that doesn't pay employees anything - then our taxes might not be so high."

---

"Did the sale of Rockdale Hospital go through? If so, when did it move and why did we do this? Also, for the Rockdale High School people, if you want to get rid of a high school coach, you go through the Georgia High School Association in Thomaston. Also, good luck to Ga. Tech and Georgia, both of them are going to bowl games."

Editor's Note: Following a public hearing on Nov. 14, the Attorney General's Office has 30 days to submit a written decision whether to approve the sale of Rockdale Medical Center to Signature Hospital Corporation.

---

"All you garage sale and yard sale people have to know that it is against the law to put your dang signs up on four-way stop signs and directional signal signs throughout the county. You can get arrested for it. And, two, Sonny Perdue, thank you very much. We had rain in Conyers the day after your prayers."

"I have been reading with interest the articles in the opinion poll about the $2 million a year Rockdale citizens lose due to theft of water by about 2,000 customers. Help me check my math, but that is about $84 every month we lose for each thief stealing Rockdale's water. I hope someone at the Rockdale Citizen will pick up this story and really dig into it. The bold fact standing out is that someone is not truthful at the county level and the citizens of Rockdale are just going along with quotes from county officials printed in the Rockdale Citizen. I feel our local paper needs to get a tight grip on this huge story and not let go until the real answers have been wrung out of our county officials. Further, if results are not found quickly and truthfully, I think we should ask outside law enforcement to step in and take over. The average bank robbery is around $2,600 - that means we have the equivalent of 770 bank robberies per year in Rockdale based on the county's own statement of losses. Can you imagine FBI resources coming to the help with our local sheriff if he was hit with that kind of crime wave? Well, folks, wake up. We have been hit, and a new year is around the corner. I recommend the reporter go and see the former Rockdale Water Resources director and get the real scoop. Better yet, the local grand jury needs to rev up and push ahead at full speed to get the answer so we can get the real and verifiable solution now. Tomorrow will be too late, our water is running out. In closing, let me ask each of you a question. Do you think these water thieves are practicing water conservation?"
