COVINGTON - Because resurfacing projects approved by the City Council in August have come in more than $25,000 under budget, several additional streets have been added.
The council approved resurfacing of nine streets, awarding a $125,000 contract to Pittman Construction, according to Transportation Project Manager Billy Skinner. The actual cost came in at just under $100,000, so Skinner requested approval of additional work on Georgia Peach Avenue, Elizabeth Street, from Floyd to Conyers streets, Perry Alley and Academy Springs Circle. The work will be paid for through special purpose local option sales tax revenues. In other news, a portion of Dearing Street will be closed in January while construction on an underground tunnel that will serve Indian Creek Golf Course is under way, Skinner said. The road will be closed from Plantation Trace to the Covington Bypass. Construction will take three weeks, he said. The tunnel is being funded by the golf course. At that time, the new portion of Dearing Street will be opened, the result of a joint county and city project to move the Dearing Street intersection north toward Eastside High School.
