Three from county play in soccer cup

Senior Courtney Foster came up big for Clemson on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn.

Foster, the all-time leading goal scorer in Heritage history, scored twice in the second half as the Lady Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Charlotte 4-2.

Foster's fifth goal of the season tied the game at 2 just eight minutes into the second half. Her sixth goal of the season at 66:34 extended Clemson's lead to 4-2 at the 66:34 mark.

Clemson advances to play host Tennessee today at 2 p.m.


Dingle's MVP performance key for KSU

Junior Caitlin Dingle was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player after helping Kennesaw State earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by claiming the tournament championship.

The former Rockdale standout recorded the game-winning goal, her 16th goal of the season, in a 2-0 victory over East Tennessee State last Thursday. In the championship game, Dingle put the Owls on the scoreboard first, scoring in the ninth minute on a 20-yard blast. KSU beat Mercer 2-1 to claim the title.

However, the Owls' season came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Florida State on Friday night in Tallahassee, Fla., in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Cook earns Ohio Valley Conference honor

Samford freshman Lauren Cook has been named to the Ohio Valley Conference's All-Newcomer Team.

The former Heritage High School star is leading the Bulldogs in goals with nine this season.

The Bulldogs finished second in the OVC Tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Samford lost a heartbreaker to LSU on Friday in Tallahassee, falling 1-0 in double overtime.

Woodson scores in playoff game for CSU

Freshman Jessica Woodson scored the first goal in Columbus State University's 5-0 win over Queens University in the NCAA Division II women's soccer Southeast Regional last Friday. It was the sixth goal of the season for Woodson, who played at Rockdale.

On Friday night, the Cougars defeated Tusculum 2-0 in the Southeast Regional championship. CSU squares off with Tampa today at 1 p.m. in Columbus for the right to advance to the NCAA Division II Final Four in Orange Beach, Ala.

Hurd named to Great South all-academic team

The Great South Athletic Conference has named former Salem Seminole Caitlin Hurd to its all-academic team. Hurd was one of six Piedmont players to receive all-academic team honors.

The sophomore midfielder tallied two assists this season and started all 16 games.


Carter contributes

early at UGA

Former Newton standout Brittany Carter is off to a good start in her freshman season at Georgia.

Carter, a 5-foot-9 freshman guard, scored four points and recorded one steal in nine minutes in the Lady Bulldogs' 81-53 win over Richmond.

During Georgia's 84-56 win over George Mason, she scored nine points and added two rebounds and an assist in 18 minutes of action.

Against Georgia Southern, Carter tallied seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. She also was a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line in the 105-66 victory.

Dobbs, Cook play

key roles for Bears

Heritage's Jaquas Dobbs and Eastside's Torrio Cook are both making contributions for the Truett-McConnell men's basketball team.

Dobbs, a sophomore, had 16 points and seven rebounds in the Bears' victory over the Southern Wesleyan JV. Cook added 10 points for the Bears.

Against Denmark Tech, Cook, a freshman, fueled a Truett-McConnell by hitting four 3-points in the final eight minutes of play, as the Bears rallied for the win. He finished with 15 points.

Dobbs added 10 points and is leading Truett-McConnell in scoring at 11.5 points per game after six contests.

Boswell named preseason All-American

Former Newton standout Jerrell Boswell has been named a National Junior Athletic Association Men's Basketball Preseason All-American.

The Snead State Community College sophomore, who transferred from Wallace State Community College at Hanceville after last season, was a third-team selection.

Last year, he averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists a game for Wallace State.


Benefield shines in Georgia Southern loss

Heritage's Terrione Benefield recorded one solo tackle, two assists, one fumble recovery and one broken-up pass in Georgia Southern's 24-22 loss to Furman last Saturday.
