Rockdale Citizen Poll 11-17-07

This week's citizens' poll was an open line ...

"I was at the RMC public hearing and was surprised at the low turnout, only about a third of the auditorium was full (rezoning meetings usually fill two-thirds or more of the auditorium). Most of the public was in favor of the sale including hospital employees, doctors, community leaders and organizations. There were a few against the sale, primarily for personal reasons, but one was remarkable. Harry Downs and his lawyer. What is it with Mr. Downs? He sued the hospital board before when he was concerned the hospital may move to the south side of the county, making his property less valuable, but why now? The last lawsuit resulted in the current mess, and if he sues again it could be worse. His lawyer kept saying it was for the 'citizens' of Rockdale County,' but it was obvious based on the turnout and comments, the citizens are not that concerned and welcome the possibility of having a well-run and well-financed hospital that does not require additional taxes from the citizens to avoid foreclosure. I hope Mr. Downs does not plan on suing again and allows the hospital to grow into the health care facility we should have had five years ago."

"I was just browsing the Newton Citizen online. How come that paper online is so much nicer and easier to navigate and has archives and the Rockdale Citizen does not?

Editor's note: Our new Rockdale Citizen Web site was unveiled Thursday afternoon. Please let us know what you think.

"This is in response to the previous week's comment of how Rockdale County employees need incentives to work. There was also a statement that if the county employees did not like it, they could go somewhere else. You were correct in that statement, because if it were for the money they would go somewhere else. I am not talking about high ranking officials, chiefs and appointed positions. I am speaking of deputies and firefighters who come to work every day and put their lives on the line for the citizens and taxpayers of Rockdale County and those that share our community. These are the men and women that you see in the patrol cars and fire trucks around the county. You were right when you said that the county taxpayers pay their salaries. I believe most, if not all, deputies and firefighters want to serve the community and are willing to place their lives on the line so that others can enjoy a safer and better place to live. I believe that most, if not all, enjoy doing the job they were called to do. Remember they leave home in mornings and pray that they will return after their shift to their families. We have had raises in the past few years; however, they were well below cost of living. We need to attract long-term employees with experience, especially with our deputies and firefighters due to the high level of knowledge needed to perform their duties. We must be competitive with salaries so that we can keep qualified personnel. It is your community and you should be involved in what is going on at the fire department and other county offices. Remember, 'Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.' ( John 15:13)"

"What do you think about this fact of truth? The upshot is that Bank of America is offering credit cards that can be gotten by illegal immigrants. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Bank of America had quietly started offering credit cards to people without Social Security numbers. The new offering from Bank of America is available to those who have no Social Security number and no credit history as long as they have held a checking account with the bank for three months and have avoided any overdrafts. The Wall Street Journal article also says most of the adults in the U.S. who do not have Social Security numbers are undocumented immigrants. There has been criticism of the program not only because of the controversy of serving illegal immigrants but also because the credit card has a high interest rate and there is an up-front fee. "I would like to express my disappointment in the administration of Rockdale High School. The football program has suffered tremendously with the loss of a player, Tyler Davis. Then, we get a coach that has a shady past. This year was plagued by problems. I find it hard to believe that this was the best they could find. We saw a different side of Coach Johnson between February when he was introduced and May. He talked a good game. He has not lived up to his contract. The only thing he accomplished was low morale. Why can't Rockdale ever get top-notch coaches? Don't the kids deserve better?"

"Georgia High School Association told Heritage High they were going to the play-offs. The Patriots did go to the play-offs and played very well against the No. 1 ranked team. Those boys played their hearts out and played hard all season. They are much improved from last year's team and Coach Frazier has done an excellent job. The Heritage team gave us something to watch all season. Thank you coach and players - and keep your heads up. You played well."

"I have read with interest the posts done about the Rockdale High School football team. I could have sworn I was reading about the Heritage High School football team. We too have had our seniors let down this year. The coaches took something away from them that they can never get back. The disappointment, disbelief and total garbage that happened to my son at the last high school football game he will ever play in will never be forgotten. The coaches have no one to blame but themselves for the lackluster season. But you will never hear them take responsibility for their actions. The blame is always placed elsewhere. It has been that way for the last four years. We had such hope with the new coach this year. He must not have understood what the boys had gone through since they were freshmen. They just wanted to have a winning season and to be able to hold their heads up high and go out with some sort of pride in being a part of the team at Heritage. I wish the upcoming players and parents lots of luck. I only wish I could get all the money back that I paid into the program."

"Wow! It's great to be a Georgia Bulldog. Coach Richt has gotten our team back in black and doing the dirty bird on the sidelines during the game. It is great how he had the whole team in the endzone in the Florida game and how the entire stadium was black. Coach Richt has such great character, I just wish there weren't so many drunk fans fighting and cursing in the stands. Perhaps they can take a lesson from Coach Richt on sportsmanship.

"What a sham! Salem Chase Apartments in a tie with Village at Almond Creek - no comparison! Salem Chase is a dump at best. I know, I live in Salem Chase, but I will not renew my lease. Maybe you should have a better criteria for voters. I wish you could or would take a look at this complex..."

"Just to set the record straight, Obama did hold his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. He did not do so while singing the National Anthem. Direct quote, 'My grandfather taught me how to say the Pledge of Allegiance when I was 2,' Obama said, his annoyance obvious. 'During the Pledge of Allegiance, you put your hand over your heart. During the National Anthem, you sing.' The lesson we receive from this is, don't believe every e-mail you receive. Please do a little research before you slander someone."

"Why isn't there any information in the Citizen about the young girl from Heritage High School who was involved in a serious car wreck Wednesday after school. I heard of this accident through breaking news on Channel 2. Why hasn't anything been printed in our local newspaper?"

"To the parents of Rockdale High School students, if you want a new football coach, go to the Georgia High School Association located in Thomaston. Go down there and talk to the head man of that organization. Also, talk to Samuel King. Good luck to Salem this year in the playoffs, and good luck to Georgia Tech and Georgia this week and next week."

"What has happened to intelligence and common sense in Rockdale County? Schools are overcrowded, roads are overcrowded, jails are overcrowded and the hospital is being given away to a private company because of incompetent management. And, the worst is yet to come when we give out of water. At the same time the Chamber of Commerce and county commission is encouraging unbridled growth and using up all the real estate in the county for subdivisions and shopping centers. All the county commissioners can say is 'Let's dig a well.' Let's face it, folks. Rockdale County is facing an ecological disaster, and then there is going to be a lot of finger-pointing. What happened to moderation and saving the environment? Will our children and grandchildren be able to breathe the air or get a drink of water?"

"I am calling in response to the recent comment about the missing water customers, the 2,000 in Rockdale County. As I remember, our county commissioner, Roy Middlebrooks, is retired after 30 years with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Department. I feel if anyone can find those 2,000 customers that are missing, I think Roy Middlebrooks could do it. Maybe he could teach Dwight Wicks how to do it. Next, I would like to see if we could put on the front lawn on Milstead Avenue in front of the county commission offices a big colorful billboard like the one we use for United Way drives. Let it show how many we started with as far as lost customer, and then color in how many have been found or caught or sent to jail. Yes, sent to jail, because this is theft at the felony level. It is money each of us has had stolen from us here in Rockdale County. Water is precious now. Whether we get someone in to find those customers or do as suggested, have a recall and get someone in who can do the job."

"I am calling to compliment the teacher's comment in last week's poll. It was so true. Good job on a great comment. The comment on racism and the comment on the Rockdale coach were both good. Sounds to me like the Rockdale coach needs to go, and I don't even have a football player at Rockdale High School. I just want to say that last week's poll, those three were good articles. The teacher is so right. Parents should go into our schools more and see what good teachers do."

"Why is a construction site on Gees Mill allowed to fill their water truck from the fire hydrant? We would all be better served to just stop construction, since houses are not being bought. What a big waste of our water supply."

---

"Take note, Wyldwood. When you get the OK to develop, bring your own water. Our elected officials are not responsible to turn you down. Their intent is to fill up this county with more and more people to clog the roads, schools and jails. When are they going to learn? We are running out of water. We have been on water restrictions for two years now. It is time to think about limiting development coming to this county. Things are getting critical. The schools are worse for having too many kids and no place to put them. We have added to the jail several times. What are we going to do when we don't have water?"

---

"I am calling to ask about a picture that was not on the front page of the Citizen. It was the one of Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Obama did not put his hand over his heart, and refused to say the pledge. What kind of an American is this? This has nothing to do with politics, but being an American. Also, anyone who wants to practice their freedom of religion had better think twice about voting for Obama. That is his right and his American right, but what about the right of us to have a president who would stand and pledge allegiance to our country?"

"I cannot understand how an adult in the leadership role of a coach can make a statement to a member of the Rockdale Citizen saying that one player on Rockdale County High School football team is now the 'team.' Yet, this is exactly what RCHS coach William Johnson said in an article in last Saturday's paper. I am proud of the efforts of the young running back mentioned in the article, but what about the kids who blocked for him all season? What about the kids who have played for the school for four years and not just four months? What about all the tackles made on defense this year? How many of those did this running back make? How can any one player be the entire team? Coach Johnson started this year preaching about unity, yet he was determined to divide these players - on and off the field. He taught our young men about what it is to be petty, to be so prideful that he blames a group of kids for his inadequacies. And, to be so insensitive that he has taken away every tradition that meant something to these kids. Way to go, seniors, for showing more class than your coach did."

"Water Department director terminated? He is not the only change needed. Any contact I have had with employees at RWR has been a disaster. It doesn't surprise me that there is $2 million in uncollected and past due bills. My October bill cleared the bank the day after I mailed it. First time this has happened. In March, it took 11 days."
