CONYERS - Both Salem's and Rockdale's swim teams were in action Tuesday night at Johnson Park in the season-opening swim meet with Starr's Mill and North Oconee.
Starr's Mill took first place overall with 369 points, while Salem placed second with 260 points. North Oconee (247) and Rockdale (159) rounded out the scoring.
The Seminoles placed first on the boys side with 177 points, while the Lady Seminoles placed fourth with 83 points. The Bulldogs took third on the boys side with 69 points, while the Lady Bulldogs took third (90).
Salem swim coach Lisa Boyd said it was a very competitive meet to begin the new season.
"The competition was of a high level Tuesday night," Boyd said. "North Oconee's girls team placed 18th overall in the state championships in 2007. Starr's Mill finished fourth for girls and 16th for boys in the state AAAA championships last year. Therefore, our defeat of the Starr's Mill boys and combined defeat of North Oconee is a great accomplishment for Salem."
Salem accomplished a rare feat for the first meet of the season, qualifying swimmers for the state meet in four events.
The Salem boys 200-yard medley relay team, which consists of Josh Danforth, Logan Gunzenhauser, Matt Tibbets and Carlisle Whitley, qualified for state with a time of 1 minute, 49.70 seconds. The time was well below the state standard qualifying time of 1:52.00.
Tibbetts also qualified for state in the 200 individual medley (IM) with a time of 2:08.52, the 100 breaststroke (1:05.48) and was part of the state qualifying 200 free relay team.
The 200 free relay team, which consists of Tibbets, Horton, Logan Gunzenhauser and Whitley, qualified for state with a time of 1:37.75.
Tibbetts took first place in both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. The Salem boys won the 200 free relay and the 200 free relay.
