COVINGTON - Newton's volleyball team made some noise completing their first season with some wins to show for their efforts.
The Lady Rams did what a lot of first-season teams fail to do - win some games and make it past the first round of the area playoffs.
"We actually met one of the goals that we set," Newton head coach Shandelyn Carter said. " We wanted to fare well in the area tournament."
The Lady Rams beat Redan 25-11, 25-15 to advance to the second round of the Area 2-AAAAA tournament. Unfortunately, they were unable to do to Luella and Morrow what they did to the Lady Raiders.
Newton had the advantage of being led by a group of experienced players with senior Monty Lo as captain.
"Monty's a good captain. Not only is she a very good athlete, she's also good at giving and taking direction," Carter said.
Helping the Lady Rams score points from the service line were Monty Lo and junior April Lo, sophomore Selana Xiong and senior Kanysha Sherels. April Lo led the team with 53 aces.
The Lo sisters also led the team in kills, while sophomore Joy Pollock had the most blocks.
Newton's season was a work in progress, which was demonstrated in the final home match against Salem.
Although they lost, the Lady Rams forced the Lady Seminoles into a third game.
"I was pleased with the way the season turned out. We did well, especially in the last home game with Salem," Carter said.
The Lady Rams had seven wins in their inaugural season, including victories over Eastside, Alcovy, Stephenson and McNair.
"This year, we learned about the game," Carter said. "For next year, I want to build on the skills they have and do more conditioning."
