COVINGTON - Eastside's Drew Ellwanger and Nijyl Chavis are getting the chance to swim at the high school level.
The pair of swimmers, who compete year-round through USA Swimming, will participate in their first high school event tonight at Johnson Park in a meet that includes Salem, Rockdale and Starr's Mill.
They won't be swimming for team points, but their times do count toward qualifying for the state meet in February.
Ellwanger swims with the Rockdale Riptides, and his father, Gregg Ellwanger, is a coach at the Covington YMCA. Chavis swims for the DeKalb Aquatics Center.
"These two swimmers should do really well," Gregg Ellwanger said. "We're real excited. We have a lot of good swimmers in this area but don't have the chance to swim at the high school level."
In order to represent Eastside, the swimmers had to get the support of the school. The elder Ellwanger said Eastside athletic director Dennis Roddenberry has been very supportive of their efforts.
