COVINGTON - The Salem Seminoles will take on St. Pius X in the first round of the Class AAAA state tournament.
The first round of the state football playoffs is Friday with Salem playing host to the Golden Lions at 7:30 p.m. at Reid Memorial Stadium.
Salem (9-1) enters the state playoffs as the No. 1 seed from Region 8-AAAA while St. Pius X (7-3) is the No. 4 seed out of Region 6-AAAA.
The winner advances to play Rome or Pebblebrook. Salem would host the second-round game as Rome is the No. 2 seed from Region 7-AAAA and Pebblebrook is the No. 3 seed from Region 5-AAAA.
Salem started the season with a 21-0 loss to Thomson but came back to win nine straight. The Seminoles beat Morgan County and Jackson County in nonregion play. Salem went on to beat Eastside, Alcovy, Rockdale, Heritage and Cedar Shoals in subregion play before defeating Madison County 31-11 to win the region title last week.
St. Pius X started the 2007 season with three straight wins over North Springs, Stone Mountain and Columbia. The Golden Lions then lost to Tucker but beat Washington to enter the second half with a 4-1 record.
St. Pius X opened the second half of the season with a 20-17 loss to Cedar Grove. It was followed by wins over Southwest DeKalb, Mays and Miller Grove before a 21-7 loss to Marist in the final game of the season.
