COVINGTON - Newton County Fire Services has received a $30,000 grant that will be used to purchase turnout gear for firefighters.
The grant comes courtesy of the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company's Heritage Program and requires no local matching funds, according to Fire Chief Mike Satterfield. The funds will be used to purchase the gear firemen wear while fighting fires, including coats, pants and helmets, Satterfield said. "It's very much needed and it will be a big help," he said. Satterfield said the department had $40,000 budgeted to buy turnout gear this year, meaning the grant will allow them to nearly double the amount of gear they can purchase. "We're very happy to receive that, and we appreciate Fireman's Fund Insurance for doing that," he said. Fireman's Fund Insurance Company was founded in 1863 with the mission of donating a portion of its profits to the widows and orphans of San Francisco firefighters. The Heritage Program was founded in 2004 to support fire departments and fire safety and burn prevention organizations across the country.
