11-10-2007 Rockdale Citizen Poll

This week's citizen's poll was an open line ...

"I am a teacher. I am in the classroom because I choose to be. I want to work with your children, to see them succeed and be happy. I spend hours of my time out of school and more money than you realize to give your children what they need. I attend seminars and training, read educational books and journals, trying to be the best I can be. I listen to parents belittle my profession. I hear your children say that all teachers are stupid and incompetent, and I know where those words were first heard. I work hard to inspire my students to reach goals that sometimes seem impossibly hard for many of them, yet the government tells me I must get them there no matter what. When I don't, I read all about it in the paper and in the phone-in poll. I have desks that are falling apart, too few textbooks, and the carpet on my classroom floor is repaired with duct tape. I treat all students fairly, yet I'm still called racist, and sometimes worse, by both students and parents. When I look at the 90+ students that sit in front of me every day, I see individuals, I see faces, I see personalities; I don't see race. Let me tell you what else I see every day. I see dedication. I see children overcoming tremendous odds. I see the excitement when they learn something new. I see caring, honest individuals. I see insatiable curiosity. I see bravery and courage. I see the future of our country. My students keep me going. They inspire me. I am not unique or special. I am just one teacher, like all others."

"To our wonderful neighbor who lives on the corner of Stedman and Thrasher, otherwise in October known as "Deadman & Slasher,' we are deeply sorry for the thoughtless acts of those individuals on Halloween night that violated your yard. Our kids and every child in our neighborhood has always waited in anticipation to see what your yard would bring every October. Always adding something new and exciting. We hope these thugs with pathetic parents are caught and prosecuted. But mostly, we hope that you come back next year bigger, badder and scarier than ever before, all for the sake of those who come from miles around to see your yard every Halloween."

"To the person regarding Mexican TV, this is the world's melting pot and it is opinions like those that spark racism. There is a financial market for these channels, just as there is a market for hunting and fishing channels. I am sad that you have so much hate in your heart - but you will answer for that. I am also sad that your only comment in this wonderful paper is about something hateful and unproductive. Do you not have anything better to complain about, like our drought, our education system, Hillary?"

---

"America, what a country! The only place in the world where a citizen can criticize government officials and government processes and not be massacred, manicured, and/or pedicured (MMP) one at a time - except in a "Right to Work State (STWC).' Of course when voters have a "citizen review process,' the chance of a MMP happening is almost eliminated, even in a STWC."

---

"To the person that wrote "Baggy, saggy pants; don't people realize each generation has found problems with how kids dressed?' Your response is exactly what I was talking about. Get over it. It's the people like you that stop things from moving forward. Each case you referred to are different cases - and in different parts of the country. Although I do agree that sometimes there is injustice in this world there are plenty of times white people suffer, too ... So sit back, take a chill pill and get over it. Baggy saggy pants are not appropriate to wear anywhere."

"Racism? When is everyone going to realize that we, as a nation, have reversed what happened in the '40s and '50s? You can say what you want about two blonde girls being glorified for robbing a bank and how poorly treated five black juveniles were treated. Take the time to look around. Black colleges? Miss Black America? African-American History month? Explain to me why, when the caucasian Americans had similar things, it was bad and now it's OK for black Americans to do what they fought against for so many years. Explain to me why and how that is right. If you ever really paid attention to what Martin Luther King had to say, he wanted total equality. In other words, a person's race or sex had no bearing. People obtained jobs and benefits solely on their qualifications. Take race and sex off of all applications and base things on the other information provided. It shouldn't matter what color you are, you should be able to go and do what you want where you want. Quit blaming everything that goes wrong in your life on the color of your skin. We are all human beings. It doesn't matter what we look like. Where is Al Sharpton when a white person is mistreated? Get off the race bus and quit looking at color. Look at each other as humans, only then will things be fair."

"I would like to state the condition of the Rockdale County High School Football Team. First, I would say players hold your heads up, because it is not about you. You only did what you were told, which is nothing. Senior players I apologize as a parent because we did not step up as parents to defend you. What you all don't know is our beloved Coach (William Johnson) and his cohorts refused to play some key senior players for some apparent reason. When we tried to address the problems, we were given the brush off. I can understand if they weren't good enough, but we are talking about 90 percent of the senior players were all region or all area last year. So our senior players had to take a back seat to freshman and sophomore players. I certainly would understand if they were better players, but unfortunately, they were not. I am very disappointed in the way our coaches have responded to the players and the parents. Again, it wasn't the kids' fault, but very bad coaching and decisions this year. Always remember, pride always come before destruction. Coaches lay aside your pride and think about how you have hurt the whole team. The kids wanted to play, but you broke their spirit every game before they even hit the field."

"People of Rockdale County please pay your taxes, so that the school board can purchase the necessary equipment to fix the rear gym stairs at Salem High School which are unsafe, and to buy the grounds keepers mowers, edgers, string trimmers and blowers in order to make the property appealing. Who is in charge of this? Also the stormwater tax is definitely not paying someone to clean the curbs, just look at some of the area roadways and you will see how blocked some of these are. Another thing, to some of the commercial owners and renters (food, gas, etc.) if you maintain the look of your business you might get more business, oh and residential owners/renters you might get that respect from the neighbors who do care about the "hood.'

"Is it just me or has anyone else heard the degrading and humiliating language used by the coaches toward the players on Rockdale's sideline? I have heard words that should not be used around children much less to them. How is this allowed to happen? I bet if the coaches talked to the kids that way in the classroom, someone would do something about it. Where did this new coach come from anyway? I have seen better play calling at the football games played at the Earl O'Neil complex. It also seems that every game I've been to there have been less and less players on Rockdale's sideline. What's happened to them? Have they all quit? I also noticed at the Eastside game that not one of the seniors got to start. I find that to be so disheartening that the senior players did not get to start in their last game of their high school career. Good luck to them in their futures. I surely hope that they are not planning to keep this guy around. If they do, it looks like another miserable season coming next year. Lastly, I would like to congratulate the great job done by the band. It seems that under their new direction this year that they got off to a better start than the football team."

"Three cheers for (state) Sen. John Douglas! Judge Benham called him this afternoon and he is not coming to Rockdale County to swear in the Democrats' chairwoman. He said he did not know that she was asking him to swear her in to a political office. He called Ms. Wilson and told her he would not be coming. She did not know, evidently, that Garland Moore was a hired hand, not an elected judge, or that Magistrate Judge is a partisan office, when she used that as example to say there was nothing wrong with asking a (non-partisan) State Supreme Court Judge to officiate in a partisan event. The woman is not very politically savvy to have put Judge Benham in a position like that. I would say to Republicans, "If that is the best they can do ... not to worry.'"

"Incredulous! God bless America and help the lost voters of the city of Conyers and Rockdale County. Is it the water we drink, fear, plantation mentality, Rip Van Wrinkle syndrome, ignorance as is claimed for the inappropriate action of our youth, or all of these and more. A decade since a city councilman had a challenge in the form of a candidate; acceptance of Incumbents actions that ignore an opportunity to address their constituents; and continued voter acceptance of avoidance of a citizen oversight process are a few key community issues. When voter negligence permits a 7.77 percent tail to wag the whole dog and fail to hold it accountable for major snafus, something is definitely wrong with that picture. And, that, fellow voters with inquisitive minds, is a big community issue. Small things like the discontinuance of notices of Rockdale Commission meetings in the local news is an example of the little things that count. If eligible voters, in 2008, follow the pattern of the 2007 election in Conyers, we're in trouble big time. The use of words like "voters decisively approve' and "handily wins' is a subtle perpetration of gross misrepresentation upon the community by a media's interpretation that is designated as its official notice of government information. That fellow voters with inquiring minds, is incredulous - 355 ballots cast from 4,566 registered voters in the city of Conyers speaks volumes."

"Will some one please pinch me. I must be dreaming. The lead story in the Citizen on 11-01-07 was about a water rate hike proposed by the Rockdale Water Resources' Dwight Wicks. The biggest story here missed by the reporter, Jay Jones, is how could Rockdale Water Resources say they now have found four employees to go out and hunt for water violators. Just recently, we were told they did not know where 2,000-plus customers were who have not been billed in years. I think the first order of business by Chairman (Roy) Middlebrooks would be to tell Mr. Wicks to find those 2,000 customers first or turn in your notice. It is absurd to have our county mismanaged in this fashion - to allow 2,000-plus homes and business not to pay a penny in years and years and now the county wants to waste more money and water on those who don't pay anything. This almost sounds like a dream doesn't it? Well, wake up, you are in Rockdale Land. And, it is true. This kind of mismanagement of our government crosses the line, warrants the recalling of our county boards or at least the firing of the Rockdale Water Resources manager."

"I read in the Saturday paper about the bold plan of developing a new shopping center in the county. I think it is call Wyldwood or something. We have enough Wyldwoods in Conyers now. We don't need another shopping center. Do we have enough water in our system to support something this size? I don't think so. How do we stop this continual growth and pilferage of the greenspace we have left."

---

"I understand Oprah Winfrey is going to visit Macon in the foreseeable future. Maybe she will find the city so fascinating that she will advise and put in her magazine and on her program that it is one of the best places in America to live. Let's hope she does."

---

"I can't believe we are entertaining the idea of building Wyldwood Place. We have enough shopping centers. It will be just enough for the white, black and Spanish riffraff of this county to hang out day and night. I hope the commissioners will turn this one down."

---

"I wanted to encourage the newspaper to do a thorough evaluation of our water system in Rockdale County - the numbers for a day's supply, etc., so we can compare it to the areas around us. We really haven't heard anything much about our own water supply and what jeopardy it might be in. This doesn't have to be in the Citizen's Poll. I would rather see it on the front page of the paper, so everyone can read it and know what our situation is."

---

"To the person wondering about the stormwater utility fees. The drought has no effect because these fees are only used to pay the salaries of the people who collect the fees, and the drought has no effect on this."

---

"This comment is concerning Rockdale Medical Center. I think if the business office would stay open until 4:30, like the sign says. I went to pay my bill. It was 20-after-4, and the doors were locked tight. Maybe they didn't want my $1,000, but I think some CEO needs to look into this."

---

"Obama refused to not only to put his hand on his heart during the pledge of allegiance, but he refused to say the pledge. Think before you vote for this man."

---

"I am calling in response to the article on the front page of Saturday's paper about Wyldwood a bold plan. I have a very different opinion of this plan, and it is not a bold plan - it is a dumb plan. I cannot believe they want to put this out in this area in Rockdale County close to the mall. Traffic is terrible out here. Crime is just ridiculous now. And, water, how are they going to have water for a project this big. I think the only people who are going to benefit from this are Randy Mills, Tom Sigman, Alton Housworth and the developer from Florida."

---

"I just wonder what has happened to Rockdale's football program. I have been attending games at my alma mater for years. This new Rockdale just ain't the same. Where is the old Rockdale? Where is the dog walk and Stoney? I think Stoney has been at every game held at RCHS since he played there. The rumor is the new coach ran him off. I say we keep our traditions alive and get rid of the new coach. He only won one game this year anyway."

---

"Who told Heritage that they were going to the playoffs with three wins and six losses? They have lost their mind. There is no way Heritage will go to the playoffs with three wins and six losses."
