Holiday lighting set for Nov. 15

COVINGTON - The annual lighting of the Newton County Historic Courthouse, signaling the start of the holiday season in Covington, will take place Nov. 15.

The theme for this year's holiday festivities is "What the Dickens is going on in downtown Covington?"

"The mighty pen of Charles Dickens has celebrated the bustling streets of London during the Christmas season. This year in downtown Covington you too can experience the magic of a Victorian Christmas," is Main Street's invitation to the community.

Santa Claus will arrive by carriage at his Victorian-themed workshop at the Ramsey Furniture Annex at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Arts Association in Newton County will present the lighting of the courthouse.

The ceremony will include performances by the Community Band, led by T.K. Adams, and the Oxford Singing Children, led by Mary Lynn Luke and assisted by Eva Bone.

Following speeches by local officials, the lighting of the courthouse will take place. The public has been asked to submit nominations for deserving residents to have the honor of flipping the switch. The winner will be announced the night of the lighting, said Abigail Morgan Coggin with the Arts Association.

"We're excited about it as usual, to kick off the holiday season," Coggin said. "We invite everyone to join us and enjoy the sounds of the Singing Children, as well as the sounds of the Community Band. It's a great opportunity to come out and hear them perform."

Also, complimentary carriage rides will be offered from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Covington Rotary will be collecting unwrapped toys for the Newton County Empty Stocking Fund.

Main Street Director Josephine Kelly encouraged everyone in attendance to be on the lookout for Main Street's Holiday Fun Team, a group of teenagers who will be giving away holiday treats, balloons and temporary tattoos along with Main Street Bucks to use in stores downtown.

In addition, the lighting of Luminaries of Hope for Relay for Life will take place. To purchase a luminary for $10 in memory of a loved one or for more information, call Main Street Covington at 770-385-2077.
