4 people arrested on drug charges

COVINGTON - Four people are facing drug charges after police seized a substantial amount of marijuana from their motel room last week.

Following information regarding drug activity gleaned from a traffic stop earlier in the evening, Covington Police Department officers responded to a room at America's Best Value Inn on Alcovy Road shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, according to an incident report completed by Officer Douglas Allen.

Allen, along with officers Anthony Walden and Christopher Usiak went to room 201 where they found the suspects - Marya Nishaque Rooks, 33, of 10920 Covington Bypass Road; Christopher Harris, 19, of 5159 Hartsook Drive; Margie Lynette Love, 19, 10133 Morris Drive; and Adolphus Jermaine Upton, 22, of 3180 Thompson Avenue.

Prior to entering, Walden said he smelled a strong odor of burnt incense coming from inside the room.

After telling the suspects why they were there and receiving permission to search the room for weapons and drugs, the officers found a clear bag next to the television that contained 43 grams of marijuana, according to the CPD report.

Police also found 37 bags of individually packaged marijuana, as well as a digital scale and a pistol magazine containing three bullets.

Rooks admitted the drugs belonged to him and told police there was a gun under the refrigerator in the room. He admitted to owning the .380 caliber handgun and said he purchased it from one of his friends, Allen said.

Because all of the suspects had equal access to the drugs, they were each charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Rooks has also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
