Rockdale Citizen Poll 11-3-07

This week's citizens' poll was an open line ...

"Who made the decision to pave Ga. Highway 138 on Halloween night? My family and I were driving back from South Rockdale, and we sat in traffic for 45 minutes. I have lived in Rockdale for almost 20 years now, and I currently live in North Rockdale and choose to go to Loganville or Centerville instead of coming to Conyers to shop because of this very reason. You build a new bridge and you change the lanes, but you have four dump trucks in the middle of the road on Halloween night. This was a terrible decision made by the county or whoever made it. These children should have been in bed instead of waiting in traffic for 45 minutes. Come on, Rockdale, when are you going to start making good decisions for the children."

"Since we are in a severe drought, can we get a refund on our stormwater utility fees? (Have you noticed that we have had a lot less rain since we started paying this fee?) Makes you wonder."

---

"Rockdale County parks system does not have enough money. Why? They have four men working overtime on Saturday Sept. 29, 2007, taking lunch at 1 p.m. at Subways on Gee's Mill and Sigman Road. Why does it take a four-man crew to cut grass on a Saturday - during the middle of a drought - no rain, no grass is growing?"

---

"The Rockdale water system can't explain the extra sewage compared to the water bills. Don't they know what streets and highways where they installed their sewer pipes? Don't they know how much water to expect from rain water run-off? And, yes, the Rockdale water system needs to install a second sewer treatment plant in South Rockdale and at least three or four fresh water reservoirs are needed. The drinking ponds should be located at the Horse Park, Gee's Mill area before all the businesses are moved in, and three or four on the south end of Rockdale County."

"I am sorry to hear Mr. (Robert) Cresswell is leaving Salem (High School). I also hope the right decision is made when appointing a new principal. It will be a shame to see half of Salem's current teachers leave and a good portion of parents pull their kids from the school if the rumors are correct. I know for our family we decided to stay in Rockdale so our kids could finish out their high school years here with friends they have known all their lives. And, I really hate the idea of having to stand outside in the winter and picket the school. I'm sure I will have some followers. Mr. Mauriello needs to be our new principal."

---

"Maybe the solution to the problem with of all these criminals from DeKalb moving to Rockdale County is South Rockdale needs to separate and create its own county. Then we could control the population by preventing new neighborhoods and ban interest-only loans and the other incentives that are bringing hoodlums to the county."

"Our county is looking pretty bad in spots and has for some time. On Klondike Road, near the intersection of Iris Drive and right in front of the Comfort Inn there is a big pad (4-by-6 feet) of spilled concrete that's been there for a couple years, and it's several inches thick. When you hit it heading west on Klondike, it jars the car badly and, no doubt, throws wheels out of alignment. Avoiding it is dangerous, as it requires swerving the car out of the lane. You'd think those responsible would have fixed it long ago, but they have not. What'll it take to get this removed? It cannot be that hard to do. Who'll step up and fix this? Also, on Iris Drive and near the Smyrna Road intersection, the chainlink fence has been down for months, maybe over a year. It looks very bad and again, why have not those responsible fixed it? I see other cities and counties have no such eyesores, and if these things happen, they are quickly remedied. I know this is not a major issue; but, add enough of them together and you have a mess - a visual mess and a general poor look for our county and city. Again, who'll step up and fix this? Thanks for the chance to express these frustrations."

"I would like to know what TV service the person has so that I can get the service. I would love to have four Mexican stations to watch. They are such fun. A piece of home away from home. By the way, the TVs were probably made in China not in Mexico. The stations however might be Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc."

"Atlanta does not need another airport in northern Georgia and should instead convert the land to a giant reservoir for drinking water. The water could be piped down along I-75. Maybe Atlanta could also buy large tracts of land along the Flint River and add a few more water reservoirs. The land would immediately become tax free and could be incorporated into the city of Atlanta. There is also a lot of land for sale in Morgan and Greene counties that could be bought and turned into water reservoirs and added to the city of Atlanta. Maybe even the land along the South River in Rockdale County could make for a good lake for Atlanta."

"'Rockdale County is a dangerous place to live - like DeKalb and Clayton.' Please tell me where is there a safe place to live. White people are running from Rockdale County because blacks are moving here. Keep running. History shows black people ran from white people and did it make a difference? Eventually, we will learn how to live together."

"Baggy Saggy Pants? Don't people realize each generations found problems with how kids dressed? Don't blame the parents. Did your parents know everything you were doing? If your answer is yes, remember: 'Thou shall not lie.' There will always be racial crap in America. The reason - just look at the news and read the papers. This is America. Black people don't blame the 'man.' They just want equal justice. Fair is fair. Just look at the facts. Two blonde females rob a bank with a gun (federal offense). They are called Barbie Doll Bandits and glorified all over national television. Five black teenagers rob a grocery store with a BB gun, and they are sent to prison for 10 years - and tried as adults. Look at the Jena 6 and Genarlow Wilson case. So, please don't talk to black people about racial crap."

"To the person who commented about his or her television having four Spanish channels, and not wanting to watch 'Mexican TV,' you should know that it is people like you that make me glad to have left Rockdale County to pursue a college education. The United States has the fifth-largest Spanish speaking population in the world, the second most popular language in the world behind Chinese, and for further knowledge, please remember that Mexico is not the only country that speaks Spanish. Because of egocentric Americans like yourself who do not embrace change or educate yourself on the changes of our society, parts of our country continue to not progress towards human rights issues that must be addressed. Who cares if your television has four Spanish channels, because I doubt you watch the majority of the channels anyway. Learn to accept diversity, and learn to accept the fact that it just so happens that the majority of your ancestors - the immigrants who came to America and made you lucky enough to live in America - just happened to have spoken English. The immigrants these days do not have to speak English to be American, even if the majority of the country speaks English. Knowledge is power and acceptance, and you still need to move along with the rest of the progressive nation."

"I am calling about an item in Friday's paper. Why in the world are we spending $1.1 million of county stormwater money on cleaning up city - the city of Conyers has a storm water facility - dirty water? That is outrageous, and enough to make me, I think, withhold my stormwater fees this year. This is utterly misspent money for the county to use our fees on city projects. Their dirty water - they need to clean it up. We obviously know what kind of parameters that water needs to meet. Make the city clean it up."

---

"Last night I was trying to watch a high school football game out of Canton, when every five minutes Comcast had to have a commercial. What is going on with Comcast? There is nothing on TV to watch. You have no channels. Everything is reruns. Why not let us watch something besides commercials? Also, is the drought hurting Rockdale County and the city of Conyers? And how is it hurting the people? Also, congratulations to Salem High School who is now the defending champions again, and also to the Heritage High School band who is now the grand champion again this year."

"My comment is about the person who asked for pretty comprehensive information about the current drought and what we are doing. The problem is that the editor of the Citizen never puts anything in except with the approval of probably the chief of staff of the board of commissioners. So, the chokehold is there. Obviously, they do not want anyone to know what is happening, because nothing has been released to the paper. And it will continue until the chief of staff changes. The board of commissioners is responsible for the management of the system, much more so than the RWR staff. There are other staff members who are not technically competent who also try to manage the system and seem to be busy trying to get rid of the current director. He didn't make the problem. It came with the system from past administration mismanagement. We have not had anyone who has managed the water system effectively. The reservoir has plenty of water in it for us. The problem is that if we pile more people in we will not be drought-proof. They are bringing too many people in for the water resource that is available."

Editor's Note: What information do you think has been lacking in our coverage of the drought?

"An article on your editorial page recently implored voters to hold people accountable through the ballot box. And, in the same newspaper, you reported on the P-card scandal, but you didn't report specifics. I will reiterate what a recent Poll comment verbatim. 'Come on, Citizen, start doing some real news stories and give us real facts.' The Rockdale Citizen needs to be more accountable."

Editor's Note: I would like to know what sort of specifics you are looking for. We're certainly open to any ideas you may have. Please give me a call at 770-483-7108 ext. 248.

"To the person who called himself a Salem supporter - your grammar or lack of it is a direct reflection of the English Department at Salem. So much for group learning. Also, in a recent article, someone used the word "an" in front of the word passerby - which is not correct. But, so much for English."

Editor's Note: A cutline for a photograph this week did indeed contain a typographical error. We try our best to avoid such errors, but occasionally we stumble. We'll try to do better.

"Remember, Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. There will be a public hearing presented by the state attorney, General Thurbert Baker, concerning the sale of Rockdale County hospital. Please plan to be in attendance to hear what is being said. Our hospital is being sold for $80 million, the amount of debt we now have on the hospital. Is our hospital not worth more than that? Can we even count in dollars what it is worth? Remember, Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Rockdale County Auditorium at 5:30."

"Most of us are concerned by the flood of lead-painted products arriving in our country. Many of these products have a short, useful life. The concern not mentioned is the effect this imported lead will have on our landfills and environment, which will be reflected in the health of future generations."
