Region 8-AAAA football: Final games to determine playoff seeds
Seminoles, Eagles, Tigers control their own destinies

CONYERS - The Region 8-AAAA football playoffs are only eight days away, and at first glance, it appears a math degree is required to decipher all the possible outcomes heading into this weekend's games.

Actually, you don't need a slide-rule or a calculator, because in the region there are only 12 possible finishing scenarios - eight in 8-AAAA South and four in 8-AAAA North.

But the final standings, at least in 8-AAAA South, won't be decided until Saturday night after the conclusion of the Eastside-Rockdale game at Homer Sharp Stadium in Covington. The finishing order in 8-AAAA North will be set after Friday's games.

In the South subregion, only two teams - Salem (7-1 overall, 4-0 in 8-AAAA South) and Cedar Shoals (8-0 overall, 4-0 in 8-AAAA South) - have any kind of inkling of where they'll finish in the final standings.

For the second straight season, they'll meet Friday at Evans Memorial Stadium in what - thanks to some prodigious scheduling - is a subregion championship game.

The winner gets the title and a No. 1 seed and meets the No. 4 seed from 8-AAAA North next Friday. The loser gets the No. 2 seed and faces the No. 3 seed from the North next Friday.

The Seminoles also know one more thing - the site of their game. Salem will play at Reid Memorial Stadium on Nov. 9.

Besides Salem and Cedar Shoals, only two other teams - Eastside and Alcovy - control their destinies this weekend.

Eastside (6-2 overall, 2-2 in 8-AAAA South) can wrap up the No. 3 seed with a victory over Rockdale (1-7 overall, 1-3 in 8-AAAA South) on Saturday.

Alcovy (2-6 overall, 1-3 in 8-AAAA South) can clinch the No. 4 seed with a win over Heritage on Friday night in Covington.

If that doesn't happen, it's going to come down to the tiebreaker criteria, which are, in order, head-to-head result, result of region crossover game, record against Class AAAA competition and overall record.

For example, if Heritage beats Alcovy, it could finish as high as fourth in one possible outcome due to the tiebreakers. If Rockdale upsets Eastside, it could finish as high as third or as low as fifth.

In those situations, both team's spots will be determined by the outcome of the other game.

On the North side, things are a little more clear cut.

Habersham Central (7-1 overall, 5-0 in 8-AAAA North) is the subregion champion and will host the No. 4 seed from the South on Nov. 9 in Mount Airy.

Clarke Central (6-2-1 overall, 5-1 in 8-AAAA North) is the No. 2 seed and will host the No. 3 seed from the South on Nov. 9 in Athens.

Dacula and Madison County control their own destinies Friday night.

If Dacula wins at Loganville, it will clinch the No. 3 seed and visit Salem or Cedar Shoals the following week in the region playoffs.

Madison County can wrap up the No. 4 seed with a win over visiting Winder-Barrow. If that happens, the Red Raiders will travel to the Salem-Cedar Shoals winner on Nov. 9.

If any upsets occur, the final order will be shaken up, but not nearly as much as in 8-AAAA South.
