Newton boys fall to Hillgrove

CARTERSVILLE - The Newton boys basketball team's quest for a third straight championship at the Century Bank Holiday Hoopfest came to an end Thursday night.

The Rams (8-2) dropped a 65-54 decision to Hillgrove in the tournament's semifinals at Cass High School. Newton will play Dalton today at 4:30 p.m. in the third-place game.

Jamon Hawkins scored a career-high 25 points for the Rams in the loss, while Montrell Grimes added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

"Hillgrove is real good basketball team. They're a good quad-A team," Newton coach Rick Rasmussen said. "We didn't play real well in the first half, but we got after it in the second half. We got it under double digits one time, but lost by 11."
