Rockdale County Public Schools close for remainder of year

CONYERS - Rockdale County Public Schools are closed for the rest of the year.

Students, who finished up classes Wednesday, are out until Jan. 3. Teachers are due back Jan. 2 for a teacher work day.

Though the Central Office and schools will remain closed until Jan. 2, student registration will be open Dec. 31.

"We are making this time available as a convenience for those who may not want to wait until Jan. 2 to register for school," said Cindy Ball, public information officer for RCPS.

The student registration office will resume its normal hours - 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday - on Jan. 2.

The school system moved its student registration center in October to 1143 West Ave., which once housed the First Nation Bank adjacent to the former campus of Georgia Perimeter College.

Parents or guardians registering their students need to bring the following items with them: the students' certified birth certificate; Social Security card; a parent's photo ID and proof of custody or guardianship; proof of residency; the Georgia Department of Human Resources' certificate of immunization; and certificate of ear, eye and dental examination.

Proof of residency includes a lease agreement or property tax receipt with the most recent gas, electricity or water bill, or automobile registration or a statement of legal residence form,

according to the RCPS Web site.

Parents or guardians also may need to bring a copy a their students' records from a previous school if they are transferring from another county's school system or a withdrawal form if they are transferring from a school within Rockdale County.

More information about student registration can be found at www.rockdale.k12.ga.us or by calling the registration center's help line at 770-761-1457.

While the school system's offices are closed, RCPS may experience technology interruption from Dec. 26 to 28.

"As part of the renovation being done at the Central Office complex, our electrical power will be shut down while the power company makes major upgrades to our electrical systems," according to the RCPS Web site. "Alternate power arrangements are being made so that our Web pages and iParent connections should remain operational."
