DAR nominates Huckaby for history award

The Col. John McIntosh Chapter, NSDAR, had the pleasure to recommend Darrell Huckaby for the American History Teacher Award. A graduate of the University of Georgia in 1975 with a degree in education, Huckaby received his master of education degree in Social Studies from the University of Georgia in 1996.

Huckaby has taught in Georgia schools for 33 years. He taught in DeKalb County, Newton County, Walton County, at the Woodward Academy and in Rockdale County. He has been at Heritage High School for the last seven years. Currently, he teaches Advanced Placement U.S. History and a current events class. Under his leadership, the Advanced Placement U.S. History class has grown to three full (30 students each) classes each year - and, there is a waiting list for this class. Other high schools in the county have only one Advanced Placement U.S. History class per school. This is an extremely difficult class taught at the college level for high school students.

Huckaby is extremely proud of his students. They score in the first percentile in the nation and have twice the rate of the nation in scoring "fives," which is the highest score one can make on the Advanced Placement U.S. History Exam. Not only do his students do well on tests, he makes history an everyday subject for them so that they get an appreciation, both positive and negative, of the history of the wonderful country in which they live. He whets their appetites to learn more about the United States and its history.

His desire to share the great history of this country does not stop in the classroom. Mr. Huckaby keeps very busy speaking on America's History to a variety of public groups at their meetings and functions. These groups include senior citizens, local and state governments, men and women organizations statewide. His interesting presentations holds his audience in rapt attention, and just to hear him speak, one can tell of his genuine love and passion for sharing his vast knowledge of American History. He also writes articles for many local newspapers (The Rockdale Citizen is one). Mr. Huckaby is a published author of several books about southern life, including: Need Two; Need Four, Southern Is as Southern Does, and Grits is Groceries.

The Col. John McIntosh Chapter is very proud to enter Mr. Huckaby's name and achievements for State and National consideration for the American History Teacher of the Year.
