ATLANTA - Twenty-five games into the season, the NBA's Southeast Division is upside down: The Atlanta Hawks have a winning record and the Miami Heat are 11 games under .500 in last place.
Joe Johnson scored 25 points and gave Atlanta the lead for good with a three-point play and the Hawks outlasted the Heat 117-111 in overtime on Wednesday night. Marvin Williams had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who have missed the playoffs eight straight years. Atlanta (13-12) has a winning record at the latest point since 1998-99, its last playoff season. The Heat have lost 8 of 11, and coach Pat Riley has a new injury concern. Miami lost backup center Alonzo Mourning to a torn patellar tendon in his right knee in the first quarter, leaving his status for the rest of the season in doubt. A typical recovery period for the injury is three months. Dwyane Wade's three-point play gave Miami a 111-108 lead in overtime. Wade scored 36 points while making 20 of 22 free throws. Johnson answered with a free throw before giving Atlanta the lead 112-111 with a three-point play with 1:05 left in the extra period. Al Horford added two free throws after Shaquille O'Neal, who had 16 points, fouled out with 51 seconds left in overtime. Anthony Johnson, who scored 21 points with 9 assists, added a running jumper with 14 seconds left to put the game away. The Hawks led after each of the first three periods. A jam by Williams gave Atlanta a 97-89 lead with 5:45 left, but Udonis Haslem answered with a three-point play to start Miami's comeback. Miami scored six straight points to cut the lead to 99-98, and a jumper by Wade tied the game at 100-all with 2:37 left. With the game tied at 102, Wade blocked a shot by Horford with 1:17 left, and a jam by Haslem gave Miami a 104-102 lead. Joe Johnson tied the game at 104 with a short jumper. The teams traded turnovers before Ricky Davis missed a shot from the corner at the end of regulation.More like this story
