COVINGTON - The Covington/Newton County United Way has met its 2007 fund-raising goal of $465,000, according to Director Doris Strickland.
With a few donations yet in hand, Strickland said she anticipates this year's campaign will end up as much as $2,000 over goal. "The people of Newton County really came through this year, with the economy being the way it is," Strickland said. "I think I only had one industry that went down a little. All the others were right at target or went over goal." Once again, the Newton County School System was the top contributor, with employees donating approximately $150,000, Strickland said, $25,000 more than last year's contribution. United Bank of Covington was the only business with 100 percent participation, a feat that has only been accomplished twice in Strickland's 23-year tenure. "It humbles you to know that so many people out there think we're doing such a good job," she said. The United Way supports 19 charitable organizations. Allocations will be made in January. Nonprofit organizations may still apply for funds by calling 770-786-7638. Crystal Tatum can be reached at crystal.tatum@newtoncitizen.com.More like this story
