WINDER - Senior center Courtney Hurt collected 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Salem girls basketball team to a 69-43 victory over host Winder-Barrow on Friday night.
Jasmine Patrick added 14 points for the Lady Seminoles (5-3), who have won three straight games. Kentrell White also chipped in nine points. Salem played without senior guard Rebecca Mitchell, who missed the game with a sprained ankle. The Lady Seminoles are hoping to have Mitchell back next week when they travel to Savannah for a tournament. The Lady Seminoles seized control of the game by outscoring the Lady Bulldoggs 35-7 in the third quarter. "We really ran our transition game well in the third quarter," Salem girls coach Bill Roberts said. "We took control of the game by beating them 28-7 in that quarter. With a 35-point lead in the fourth quarter, I played our young kids." Salem plays a home game at 4 p.m. today against Mount Zion. BOYS Newton 66, Union Grove 62 McDONOUGH - Jamon Hawkins tossed in 21 points, including a 9-for-10 effort from the foul line in the fourth quarter, to help the Rams (5-1 overall, 2-1 in Region 2-AAAAA) hold on for a road win over the Wolverines. Sean Monk added 18 points for Newton, while Montrell Grimes finished with 11. The Rams took a 47-35 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Wolverines rallied by hitting 11 of 14 shots in the final frame. "Any time you can get road win in our region, it's great, regardless of the score," Newton boys coach Rick Rasmussen said. Newton will host county rival Alcovy at 6 p.m. today. Heritage 77, Jackson County 34 JEFFERSON - Shakeem Mitchell scored all of his team-high 17 points in the first quarter as the Patriots (7-3) got back on the winning track with an easy victory over the Panthers. Heritage's next game is Thursday in the opening round of the Henry County Christmas Tournament in McDonough. The Patriots will battle Eagle's Landing at 8:30 p.m. in their opening game of the tournament.More like this story
