From staff reports
Applications are now available for the Snapping Shoals EMS J.E. Robinson Scholarships and 2008 Washington Youth Tour.
Students may pick up forms in the counseling office or career center of most high schools. Forms also are available at both Snapping Shoals offices, online at www.ssemc.com or by calling Leigh-Anne Burgess at 770-385-2888.
J.E. Robinson Scholarships are currently worth $1,500 each and are awarded to high school seniors.
All high school seniors living in homes served by Snapping Shoals EMC, as well as seniors at designated high schools in our area, may apply.
Academic ability and financial need are the primary considerations in the judging process, but other factors such as school involvement also contribute to an applicant's overall score.
Full instructions and eligibility requirements are included with the application forms. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1.
In addition to the J.E. Robinson Scholarships, Snapping Shoals EMC also will be awarding an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., plus a $500 scholarship to two high school students in the area.
The Washington Youth Tour is a fun and fast-paced opportunity to learn about America's government and history while making new friends.
The two winners from SSEMC will join more than 100 other teens from across Georgia and about 1,400 other students from across the country in visiting Washington, D.C. Participants visit historic sites, meet state and national leaders, experience government in action and take part in leadership-building activities.
The dates for the 2008 Washington Youth Tour are June 12 through June 19. To be eligible for the tour and the SSEMC Youth Tour Scholarship, students must: be a high school sophomore or junior this school year, be at least 16 years old by June 12, 2008, be available to attend the entire youth tour and have a parent or legal guardian's permission to participate.
The judges will consider scholastic record, school activities, community service and other achievements in choosing the two winners.
Youth Tour Scholarships will be awarded when participants begin college.
