Pinning a pair of wins
Rockdale, Salem wrestling teams victorious at home

CONYERS - Both Rockdale's and Salem's wrestling teams were in action Tuesday night in respective home matches.

And both squads performed very well.

The Bulldogs went a perfect 3-0 in a quad-match with Newton, Jackson County and Dutchtown, while the Seminoles went 2-0 in a tri-match with Woodland-Stockbridge and Jonesboro.

Rockdale

The Bulldogs showed excellent execution on the mats with decisive wins over Newton (54-21), Jackson County (52-24) and Dutchtown (67-12).

Rockdale was led by Hylan Taylor (112 pounds), Luis Ponce (125), John Collins (140), Ahmed Burton (145), Kafuba Donzon (160) and Lloyd Martell (189), who all went a perfect 3-0 on the mats.

Keyonte Watkins (103), Joseph Richardson (135), and Ben Gregory (215) also wrestled well for Rockdale, going 2-1.

Rockdale coach Craig Hargrove said he was very impressed with the way his team performed.

"It was another great night of wrestling for us," he said. "The guys have been working hard at practice, and it showed tonight."

Rockdale hits the mats again Friday and Saturday at the Brookwood Invitational.

Salem

The Seminoles notched two hard-fought victories on the mats, winning 54-29 over Woodland-Stockbridge and 48-34 over Jonesboro.

Salem coach Tim Owens said his team has continued to take steps forward this season, and Tuesday night was another step in the right direction.

"We wrestled a little better tonight," Owens said. "Some of our younger guys are starting to wrestle better, but we're still not ready yet. Hopefully by the end of the season we'll have everything together. The important thing is that we're improving every time we go out."

The Seminoles were led by Justin Driver (119), Stephen Cross (140), Terry Millner (145), Peter Yates (152), Sammy Ahonen (160), Jeremy McElyea (171), Khaora Lamb (189) and Josh Taylor (285), all of whom went 2-0 at the meet.

Salem is in action again Friday and Saturday at the Tiger Classic at Stockbridge High School.
