COVINGTON - A man was taken into custody by authorities Monday afternoon for allegedly throwing rocks at passing vehicles on Brown Bridge Road.
About lunchtime, Newton County Sheriff's Office deputies received a call about a man, later identified as Eugene Edwards, 49, of 8308 Lakeview Drive, throwing rocks at cars near the area of Ram Drive, Cpl. Brent Langley said in an incident report. According to Lt. Bill Watterson, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office, Edwards, who he said suffered from autism, hit about 10 vehicles with rocks causing minor damage, such as cracked windows and dents. Covington Police Department Officer Julie Cole-English was later flagged down by motorists awaiting the arrival of deputies. She then made contact with Edwards, who proceeded to throw rocks at her and her patrol vehicle, breaking the windshield. Once Edwards was out of rocks, Cole-English was able to take him into custody without further incident. Edwards has been charged with four counts of making terroristic threats or acts and one count of interference with government property for breaking the windshield of the CPD unit, Watterson said.
