COVINGTON - Covington's locally licensed radio station, WGFS 1430 AM, will be expanding its footprint in the metro Atlanta area.
The Federal Communications Commission recently approved a daytime power increase from 3,900 watts to 50,000 watts for the station, according to Loxley Downer, programmer and operator for WGFS. Downer called the increase a "major" step for the station, which serves Newton and Rockdale counties, along with parts of Henry, Gwinnett, Morgan, DeKalb, Walton and Butts counties. By August 2008, the station should reach 20 counties in metro Atlanta, Downer said. Downer said he is "incredibly" excited about the upgrade. "We'll be able to serve Newton County with a lot more power and reach," he said. Downer would not disclose the owner of the radio station, but several Internet radio station guides list the owner as Multicultural Radio Broadcasting Licensee LLC. Downer said when he came on as programmer in March, the station played Caribbean music, but now plays a variety of music, and features, news, talk and sports.
